Feathers earings are a timeless option to add a touch of class to any look, making this tassel earring and feather the perfect accent for formal occasions, as well as worn casually and with jeans to make an easy style statement for everyday wear.
The first step is to determine the size of your feather. It is based on its purpose of use, but as a general guideline you should choose thread with about 70-75 wraps per inch to get the most effective results.
Based on the theme you are using, natural or neutral colored feathers are likely to be the most appropriate. Although dyed feathers provide plenty of visual interest but their bright colors can be more faded than natural feathers. Therefore, dyed feathers might not be the best choice for your particular project.
A second consideration is the space available; larger feathers can add more drama and formality while smaller ones can appear more informal. When selecting feathers for use in projects, be mindful of both their length and form; Certain feathers feature flat surfaces, while others have the curvilinear, ruffled shapes that provide an element of texture. Since not taking care of them properly could cause knots or static-charged ones being used, ensure to inspect them thoroughly before you use it.
Once you have your feathers arranged as desired, place them into the crimp tube and then seal it with pliers to provide an ensconced hold. This allows you to then do other things with them like putting beads on them to make earrings with beads or wire the headpin directly onto a barrette for headpiece use; creating bird's nest necklaces or a cluster of flowers to use as pendants is an alternative. You can also connect feathers directly to wire for bracelet creation! Make it your own! Explore different arrangements while you make various effects
Feathers are gorgeous accessories which require special care to keep them looking great. When they are stored, whether hanging or laid flat, they shouldn't be smashed through other things or by hard surfaces. They must be handled with care to prevent cracking or chipping of feathers.
To keep their appearance intact, feathers can be kept looking beautiful by wrapping twine tight around them. The twine is usually part of a kit or it can be bought separately. the waxy coating of it allows it to wrap tight around objects.
Create a wire length enough to wrap twice around the feather and shorten it by about half its original length, by using needle nose pliers to hold both ends. One runs parallel with its spine while the other is perpendicular to it and forms loops (Photos 3 & 4). After doing this you can hang it on either an earwire or jump rings (great for putting it on a necklace) using its hook through the hole that was created in the middle of wrapping (Photo 5).
If you'd like to add a second crimp bead, simply repeat these same steps until you've made your perfect feather earring remembering to make identical pairs!
